Art is half craft and half visionCat Frampton is a textile artist, a stitcher of tiny birds, a sketchbook user and a painter. She also is a farmer, who is passionate about nature, and the co-founder of the (mothballed) Society of Embroidered Work. Based in Devon, on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, her work is deeply rooted in the natural world around her. The birds and the places depicts are drawn from observation, with all of her work starting in sketchbooks. A holiday drawing of a oystercatcher lead to a ongoing series of pictures, all trying to capture the peace of a quiet view across a still sea. A swallow sweeping across a Dartmoor meadow above the backs of her cows, a kestrel hovering over the open moor or a hedge full of sparrows, all these things lead, via observation, to sketchbooks and on to embroidered or painted pictures. There is always a strong sense of place in her work, as well as a focus on the act of seeing, outside, in the places the birds live |
